== History ==

=== Early beginnings ===

The zoo traces its origins to 1923, when a rhesus monkey was donated to the Sanford Elks Club by a traveling circus. Additional animals were acquired over time, with some cared for by members of the Sanford Fire Department. The collection attracted local interest and eventually developed into a municipal zoo.

In its early years, the zoo became a popular attraction for Sanford residents. Animals included monkeys, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, and other wildlife. The collection continued to grow, and the city eventually established dedicated facilities for the animals.<ref>[https://www.centralfloridazoo.org/the-true-start-of-the-original-sanford-zoo/ The True Start of the Original Sanford Zoo — Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens]</ref>

=== Downtown Sanford location ===

In the 1940s, the Sanford Zoo relocated to facilities near Lake Monroe in downtown Sanford, at a site now occupied by Sanford City Hall. The zoo became a well-known local attraction, with exhibits that included its memorable ''Monkey Island''.

As the collection expanded, maintaining and improving the facilities became increasingly difficult. By the 1960s, the zoo faced financial and logistical challenges, and city officials considered closing it. Community members and local organizations advocated for preserving the attraction and finding a suitable new location.<ref>[https://www.centralfloridazoo.org/sanford-was-full-of-monkey-business/ Sanford Was Full of Monkey Business — Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens]</ref>

=== Relocation to its present site ===

Efforts to save the zoo eventually led to plans for a new location on land made available through Seminole County. The county provided approximately 106 acres for the development of a new zoological park near Lake Monroe.

The Central Florida Zoological Park opened at its current location on July 4, 1975, under the leadership of its first director, Jack Hanna. The relocation provided room for expanded animal habitats, improved facilities, and future educational and recreational amenities.<ref>[https://www.centralfloridazoo.org/about-zoo/history/ Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens — History]</ref>

=== Modern development ===

Over the following decades, the zoo expanded its facilities and animal collection. An animal hospital was constructed to support veterinary care, and the Reptile House was reconstructed in 1984. In 1986, the zoo became accredited by the organization now known as the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

Additional improvements included elevated boardwalks, educational facilities, playgrounds, and interactive exhibits. In 2007, the institution adopted its current name, Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, reflecting its botanical garden designation and broader educational mission.<ref>[https://www.centralfloridazoo.org/about-zoo/history/ Official Zoo History]</ref>
